چکیده

Some observations on the ability of washed Escherichia coli and Mficrococcus lysodeikticus to form colonies when plated after having been freeze-dried and exposed to water vapor in vacuo will be presented in this paper. Serratia marcescens treated in this manner is rapidly killed within a rather narrowly limited range of relative humidities around 90 per cent (Monk and McCaffrey, 1957). It was of interest to determine whether other organisms would behave similarly.

Insect immunity. I. Characteristics of an inducible cell-free antibacterial reaction in hemolymph of Samia cynthia pupae.

Pupae of the silk moth, Samia cynthia, were found to contain an inducible antibacterial activity in their hemolymph. This immunity response was provoked by primary infections with either Escherichia coli K-12 or Enterobacter cloacae. In both cases the antibacterial activity was directed chiefly towards E. coli. During standard conditions, 1% of hemolymph could kill 10(3) to 10(4) viable E. coli...

The involvement of protein kinase A in the immune response of Galleria mellonella larvae to bacteria.

The role of protein kinase A (PKA) in the humoral immune response of the greater wax moth Galleria mellonella larvae to live gram-positive bacteria Micrococcus lysodeikticus and gram-negative bacteria Escherichia coli was investigated. The immune challenge of larvae with both kinds of bacteria caused an increase in fat body PKA activity depending on the injected bacteria. Gram-positive M. lysod...

Investigating the antibacterial effects of some Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and acetobacter strains killed by different methods on Streptococcus mutans and Escherichia coli

Although there are many health advantages assigned to different live bacteria such as probiotics, some health threatening effects have also been reported. For example, live bacteria can transfer antibiotic resistance genes to other commensal and opportunistic bacteria of gastrointestinal tract. Recently, it was shown that using killed bacteria have some advantages over live ones. In this resear...

Neutralization of human serum lysozyme by sodium polyanethol sulfonate but not by sodium amylosulfate.

Sodium polyanethol sulfonate (SPS) at 500 microgram/ml, but not sodium amylosulfate (SAS) at 500 microgram/ml, precipitated egg white lysozyme (1 mg and 50 microgram of lysozyme per ml) as determined with the assay strain Micrococcus lysodeikticus ATCC 4698. Fresh and heat-inactivated (56 degrees C, 30 min) human serum (80%, vol/vol) killed M. lysodeikticus (10(4) bacteria per ml at zero time) ...

Negative Bacteria

An endo-N-acetyl-glucosaminidase which degrades the murein (peptidoglycan) sacculi of the cell walls of Escherichia coli and Spirillum serpens, but not those of Micrococcus lysodeikticus and Sarcina lutea, is present as a contaminant in a "phospholipase C" from Clostridium perfringens. The specificity of enzyme action was elucidated by reduction of liberated glycosidic groups with NaBH4 and ide...
